Nathan Berg, 13, has been playing with Northwest United for four years, and each year he has taken a greater step towards his ultimate goal: To play professional soccer. Back in August of this year, Berg was selected to participate in the Seattle Sounders Discovery Program – a huge achievement!
Northwest United FC has built a strong relationship with the Seattle Sounders Academy over the past several years. By keeping in close contact with the Academy, it offers our players a pathway to learn more about, and potentially be scouted by, our local professional team, as well as opportunities to train under the academy directors.
Berg has shown greatly in the Academy these past few months. Most recently, he and his team (2004 Boys) flew to Los Angeles to participate in the US Soccer Development Academy Showcase where he was one of the starting eleven for their first game against Albion. In a brief article about the team, it stated that “[the] Sounders attempted to play through Berg throughout the first half of the game…The target forward looked to have some tools to suggest he could have a promising future in the Pacific Northwest.”
Being a Sounders Academy player is no easy task though. On top of Northwest United trainings and games, and of course his schoolwork, Berg and his mother, Tammy, drive south to Starfire twice a week for trainings. They will also have occasional games with other MLS Academy teams and US Soccer Development Academy teams. The busy schedule, however, will pay off because it is opportunities such as these that allow players to gain as much exposure to coaches and recruiters as possible.
We greatly look forward to watching what Nathan does over these next few years. He has exceptional talent and a unique passion for the game at his young age. Best of luck to you, Nathan!
